communication

Communication in the workplace is very important to companies because it enables them to be more productive while operating effectively. Additionally, employees can experience a morale, productivity and commitment boost if they are able to communicate up and down the communication chain within an organization.

Workplace communication is the language of information between one person or group, and another person or group in an organization; it can include text messages, emails, notes, voicemails and more. In a nutshell, workplace communication is vital to a company’s ability to be productive and operate smoothly.

General important advantages of effective workplace communication encompass:

• Improvement of worker productivity
• Increase in employee satisfaction
• Positive influence on absenteeism and turnover rates

Now, in order to improve communication in your own organization, we would like to suggest the following tactics:

Identify Areas Where Communication in the Workplace is Important

This could be anything from emails and career advice to regular meetings with supervisors to keep everyone “in the loop.”

Understand the Benefits of Effective Communication

This has been at the heart of everything we’ve covered thus far, but it’s important to know that when lines of communication are open, employees feel comfortable with the relationship they have with supervisors; in return, motivation improves, and instead of overlooking communication as a motivator, management should start embracing these techniques.

These techniques can include:

Getting Personal - Share stories of your successes and failures.
Keeping Everyone in the Loop - we mentioned this before, but it warrants repeating: Be honest and transparent with your team when any important decisions and changes within the organization are going to influence their job.
Show Interest in Concerns and Solutions – Ask how you can help address employee unhappiness regarding a multitude of situations, including career advice.
Encourage Employee Input – In most cases, employees want to solve problems since it affords them the chance to feel “listened to.”

You can also:

• Set clear directions and stick to it
• Deliver frequent feedback
• Diversify your message transmission plan
• Keep communication positive

Avoid Misunderstanding

While it can be hard to do a self-check with regard to effective communication with others, there are some signs that you may need to change your style or approach. Some of these include:

• Avoidance
• Lack of clarity
• Pattern of misunderstanding

The bottom line is that if it seems like everyone around you just “doesn’t get it,” it may be time to improve your communication tactics.

In the end, it’s about becoming a more masterful communicator, and as such you can try such things as watching the language you use around employees (perhaps stay away from battle metaphors or divisive language such as “Let’s conduct guerilla warfare”), following through on promises, dealing with employee uncertainties, being an active listener, managing conflict, responding instead of reacting, providing feedback, inviting participation, keeping your team up-to-date, connecting personally with employees and taking advantage of resources.
