Job seekers are always looking for a way to stand out among the potential sea of applicants, and one way they do that, is with a degree. But what is it that employers are looking for when they see it? Does a degree matter? Does the school matter? Does the type of degree matter? What does your degree actually tell the potential employer?

These questions are important when you are considering how to best represent yourself, so let’s look at each one.

What does the employer see if you have a degree? Does a degree matter?

A college degree, especially if it is not required for the position, first and foremost tells the potential employer that you have an advanced education and likely the skills required to follow a set of basic expectations including meeting deadlines, fulfilling work requirements and performing at a high level.

If a degree is required for the position, you will have to have the appropriate degree for consideration. Your degree is more than a piece of paper, but demonstrates your qualifications and ability to understand the complexitities of a given industry, such as in accounting, business, journalism, or the like. It can involve a specific knowledge base, specific skill sets and a more robust understanding of principles and applications.

Degree requirements really do matter, and should. Your degree tells your potential employer that you have followed the rigorous path to obtain your degree and that you are a qualified and dependable candidate for their position. Whether you are seeking accounting jobs, administrative jobs or other corporate / business related jobs, you can be assured a degree is a key asset.

Does the school and/or type of degree matter?

The school where you obtained your degree likely is not as important as what was done and accomplished there. The right candidate for the job will be one who can demonstrate the skills and personality that will bring the most value to the employer. Overall, finishing school is more important than what school was attended. (Note here however that it should be an accredited school).

Many people obtain degrees not within their current field. In this case, the degree is still showing a level of commitment and general education. Again, positions that require a degree, usually call for it to be in the applicable field. However, in positions where a degree isn’t required, being able to show transferability of skills is valuable and can set you apart.
